Koochiching County has a rich and colorful history.  From the gold rush of the 19th century to the timber rush of the 20th century, developers and dreamers expected great things for this area.  These maps give a hint of those dreams.  It is interesting to compare how the developers anticipated the future with their land use plans and how that future may or may not have come to pass.

Koochiching The Plat of Koochiching represented the original town site of what later became international Falls.  Most of the plat was later vacated and the town site of International Falls was laid out over the original Plat of Koochiching.
Rainy Lake City

Rainy Lake City, Revised

Rainy Lake City was a mining community established by the Rainy Lake Improvement Company across from what is now Sha-Sha Resort.  It was laid out during the gold rush on Rainy Lake during the last decade of the 19th century.  The original developers envisioned and laid out 47 blocks, many streets, and hundreds of small individual lots.  By 1917, the plat was revised to 10 blocks, a handful of streets and only a few, large lots.  Today, Rainy Lake City is completely abandoned.
International Falls
Original Plat
Platted in 1903, this subdivision includes much of the original town site of Koochiching.  Compare the 25 foot rectangular lots in the southeast portion of the plat with the larger, irregularly shaped parcels located in the northeast portion of the plat located along the river.
Ranier Platted in 1907, Ranier was laid out and developed in a radiating pattern from a center point near the current Ranier public park.
Littlefork The original Plat of Little Fork was laid out in 1901 and included only four square blocks oriented in a diamond pattern.  Historically the name of the village was identified as Littlefork but the original plat was named Little Fork (two words).
Big Falls Big Falls was platted by E. J. Swedback and Amelia Swedback in 1902.
